Why Do Golfers Miss Short Putts?

Here’s the question Dr. Patrick Cohn answers this week:
“On short putts I will either be short or I will stab at it and run it by. On the practice green I can easily make a high percentage from 4-5 feet range. Well, why does this happen on the course and not in practice and how can I improve?”
This is the number 1 questions we receive when players have the putting yips. Why can’t golfers make short putts? Why do they make more putts from 10 feet than three feet?
Most often when you have the yips it is hard to make any short putt inside 5 feet. But the yips usually do not show up on the practice green. Why? Golfers do not feel pressure to make putts in practice. No fear–No yip.

“Finding Your Website Was The Best Thing To Happen To My Game”
“Have you ever had the yips? You really understand the yips and how a person with yips thinks. Finding your website was the best thing to happen to my game. Having the yips, I realized I got in my way, and I was always tentative with all my shots, since I was so worried about missing and the affects of missing. As you say, you need to free up the stroke and react to the target ,and not worry about the results.”
“Improvement in My Putting Stroke and Pace”
“Many thanks for your anti-yips putting drills. Since I received them, I have been practicing the drills at home for half an hour a day. I have found them very useful indeed and also stimulating. I have played two rounds of nine holes. There has been a very discernible improvement in my putting stroke and pace. Today I did not three putt any holes, which is a first for me in all the years that I have been playing. My partner said ‘you are stroking the ball rather than jabbing at the ball, as you usually do.”

“Your Drills Made Sense to Me”
“I was pleased to find your website and tips to address the mental issues with the yips. Your drills made sense to me. Other people only tackled technique. That isn’t the problem with me as I can stroke them all nicely on the practice putting green. I can even hit the long ones on the course. I will keep working at it and thank you for your interest.”
“I Have Broken Out of The Yips with Short Putts”
“I wanted to tell you I have broken out of the yips short putt issues. I have won 2 of the last 3 competitions. Right now my putting confidence is sky high. I HAD the putt yips for past 6 years. I contribute the success to two of your drills. First focus hard on the hole, forget about all else. It took awhile to get the 100% focus, but I could see the results coming. Then your advice “Let go and trust your ability.” Immediate result. Wow what a relief. Having putted for so long under yip pressure, I now feel I can be put under extreme pressure to win the club championship. I now look forward to short putts.”

“The Yips Program Has Helped a Lot”
“I write you because it’s been 6 months since I started the program Breaking the Yips Cycle. Before that I was putting with a long putt and due to the ban on anchoring I switched to a short putt and started your program. The yips program has helped me a lot. I have been able to focus on what matters instead of thinking about the outcome or fearing a yippy stroke.”
