Are You Stuck In The Yips Cycle?

Why Missing Putts Keeps the Yips Going

Dr. Patrick Cohn, golf psychology expert and author of the “Golfer’s Mental Edge” CD program, teaches amateur to tour professional golfers how to improve their mental game of golf using golf psychology strategies developed over the last 20 years of his career.

In this week’s golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, talks about his philosophy on what keeps golfers stuck in the yips cycle.

COHN: “When you have the yips you get stuck in a vicious cycle of missing having low confidence searching for answers then missing again”

“A series of episodes breaking the yips cycle normally starts with poor putting. This also applies to chipping and pitching as well. Golfers struggle the most with putting which leads to the fear of missing again which leads to not wanting to miss which I call the aftermath. Having an over control of the stroke is when you think too much about the stroke and you try to make adjustments mid-stroke and once you yip, it is reinforcing that you failed again.”
